US Sailing Certification Overview Class – May 6th, 2012

WRBC offers a US Sailing Certification overview class to members and prospective members. The charge is $100 for non-members and free to current WRBC members. Non-members who sign up also get a 60 day provisional membership which allows them to join our Sunday fun races SFR to practice their on the water skills under the guidance of one of our Assistant Instructors.

The next sailing class session will be May 6, from 12:30 to 4:30.

Harry Polly will teach a Small Boat Sailing Certification class on Sunday, April 1st and Sunday, May 6th from 12:00pm – 4:00pm.

The class is limited to 10 students. Free to WRBC members. Non-members $100 charge, includes participation in on-the-water instruction with Chris Roberts.

Chris Roberts will offer sailing instruction in the form of fun races on Sunday afternoon from 2PM to 4:30 PM from April 8th to June 17th.

No cost to WRBC members. (We also offer classes to non-members a few times a year. Contact the club for more information.)

Rain, Rain, Go Away…

Hard to believe on a sunny, calm day at the club that a few days ago the lake was flooded and the club and parking lot were under water. The flood only lasts a few hours, then the lake recedes to its normal level. But when the water is up, every boat at at the club is lifted off its davit or pad and floats.

Every time the Dallas area receives 4-6 inches of rain in a 24-hour period, White Rock Lake floods and if you’re standing in the clubhouse or on the walkways, you’re in thigh-deep water and the lake covers the parking lot, sometimes going up to, or over the street. Attached are some pictures our members sent in showing the lake level up to the door handle of the club’s front gate, and covering the fishing pier just to the north of our club.

So the next time we get heavy rains, please be sure to come down to the club afterward to check on your boat. Most will need to be placed back in the davit or up-righted on the pads, and the club is always covered in mud after a flood.

2011 Holiday Party

A grand time was had by all at the annual Holiday Party on December 3! The food was delicious and the silly gift exchange fit the bill!

Despite the storms that night, we had a couple of dozen entries, but John Galvin’s plastic Scottish golfer with a clock in its tummy won him the silliest gift prize (a stuffed elf). The bar has been raised for next year’s silly gift exchange!

Rockfish Regatta – September 17th & 18th, 2011 (Race Results & Images)

The 2011 Rockfish Regatta was a smashing success with 16 boats and 19 races over the two days on Sept. 17-18! The weather was perfect–especially considering it was rescheduled from the original date at the end of August when the 107-degree temperatures and no wind would have made miserable sailing weather!

Olympic Gold Medalist Paul Foerster won the regatta and it was a pleasure to watch sailing at that caliber. Paul’s wife, Carrie Foerster was joined by a couple of other Rush Creek members, as well as sailors from Shreveport and Austin and several local folks. PRO CP Burks said he hasn’t made it to 20 races in a weekend yet, but the competitors agreed 19 was close enough!
